How to Keep Meatballs Warm for a Party

Keep meatballs warm for a party by cooking them fully, holding them in sauce on the slow cooker’s warm setting, and stirring regularly.

How to Keep Meatballs Warm for a Party

Quick reference

Cook the meatballs completely first

Before planning how to keep meatballs warm for a party, cook them all the way through. Ground beef, pork, lamb, or veal meatballs should reach 160°F / 71°C in the center; ground poultry meatballs should reach 165°F / 74°C. Check a large meatball with an instant-read thermometer rather than judging by color alone. If you are making them ahead, refrigerate them promptly until you are ready to reheat and serve.

Transfer them to a slow cooker with sauce

Move the cooked meatballs into a slow cooker and add enough sauce to coat them well. Tomato sauce, barbecue sauce, gravy, or a similar thick sauce helps prevent the surface from drying during the party. Warm the sauce first when possible, especially if the meatballs have been chilled. Avoid packing the cooker so tightly that the sauce cannot circulate around the meatballs.

  • Add a splash of water or broth if the sauce becomes too thick.
  • Use a serving spoon or silicone utensil to avoid breaking the meatballs.
  • Keep the lid closed between servings.

Use the warm setting for holding

Once the meatballs and sauce are hot, switch the slow cooker to its warm setting for serving. Appliance temperatures vary, so use a food thermometer to confirm the food stays at or above 140°F / 60°C. The warm setting is for holding fully cooked food, not for cooking raw meatballs from scratch. If the temperature drops below the safe hot-holding range, use the cooker’s low setting briefly to bring the food back up, then return it to warm.

Stir gently and manage the serving line

Stir the meatballs and sauce gently every 20 to 30 minutes, or whenever you notice sauce collecting at the edges. This redistributes heat and keeps the exposed meatballs coated. If the sauce thickens, stir in a small amount of warm water, broth, or additional sauce. Set out a smaller serving bowl and refill it from the slow cooker instead of leaving the lid open for long periods.

If you need to hold them longer

For the best texture, aim to serve meatballs within a few hours of cooking. Keep the lid on, monitor the temperature periodically, and discard any perishable cooked food left at room temperature for more than 2 hours—or more than 1 hour when the room or outdoor temperature is above 90°F / 32°C. Refrigerate leftovers promptly in shallow containers and use them within 3 to 4 days; reheat leftovers to 165°F / 74°C before serving.
