How Much Turkey per Person?

Use this simple turkey-per-person guide to plan a whole bird, account for bones, serve generous portions, and leave room for leftovers.

How Much Turkey per Person?

Quick reference

The simple turkey-per-person rule

Plan on 1 to 1½ pounds of whole, bone-in turkey per guest. Use about 1 pound per person when the meal has several substantial sides and you do not need many leftovers. Choose 1½ pounds when you want a generous serving, have large appetites at the table, or want turkey for sandwiches and another meal. For an especially hungry group, round up rather than buying the exact minimum.

  • Side-heavy meal: about 1 lb per person
  • Standard planning range: 1–1½ lb per person
  • Leftovers or large appetites: use the upper end

Why the bird weighs more than the meat

A whole turkey’s listed weight includes bones, skin, and parts that will not become plated meat. That is why a pound of whole turkey does not equal a pound of edible meat. The 1–1½-pound guideline already accounts for this loss and is more useful than trying to calculate servings from the raw breast or thigh weight alone.

Quick reference

Use this table as a starting point, then move up within the range if you want leftovers or are serving especially generous portions.

When a smaller bird—or two—is smarter

Very large turkeys can be awkward to thaw, roast, and fit on a platter. If you are feeding a crowd, two smaller birds may cook and carve more evenly than one oversized turkey. You can also combine a whole turkey with an extra breast or turkey breast roast when guests prefer white meat. Cooking times vary by bird size, oven, pan, and whether the turkey is stuffed, so use a thermometer rather than the clock alone.

Final planning checks

Count children according to appetite, not simply by age, and round up when in doubt. If several guests prefer dark or white meat, plan an extra cut that matches those preferences. For safe cooking, check the thickest parts of the turkey with a food thermometer; poultry should reach 165°F / 74°C. Refrigerate cooked turkey within 2 hours and use refrigerated leftovers within 3–4 days.
